Ever wonder what happens when a Hurricane heads for the Orlando theme parks? It’s happening this weekend, and we have the 411. Plus, there are some big changes coming to the No Midnight Podcast…

What Happens During A Hurricane At The Parks?
Hurricane Irma is, at this moment, a Category 5 Hurricane and is barreling through the Caribbean and is expected to affect Florida over the weekend. As many of you know, Kory is traveling to Orlando and it’s theme parks next week, and we have been keeping a close eye on Irma’s path.
The latest models have Hurricane Irma affecting the eastern coast of Florida on Sunday as a Category 3 storm that can pack 111mph – 129mph winds. Orlando sits 60 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean and may see Hurricane or Tropical Storm force winds.
But what happens to the theme parks when a hurricane threatens?
History tells us that the parks will wait until the data is very damning before making a decision to close their gates, but there are many contingencies in place before the storm.
Disney’s website states, “if a hurricane warning is issued by the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area within seven days of a guest’s arrival day, the guest may call in advance to reschedule or cancel.” Universal, and Sea World have similar policies.
If a Hurricane Warning is issued for Central Florida, the local parks (Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, Sea World, and Legoland) may make the decision to cease theme park operations. This has only happened 5 times in Walt Disney World’s history:
1. 9/15/99 Hurricane Floyd
2. 9/11/01 9/11 Terrorist Attacks
3. 9/4/04 Hurricane Frances
4. 9/26/04 Hurricane Jeanne
5. 9/6/16 Hurricane Matthew
This would obviously be a big deal, but with a storm this size, guest safety is first and foremost for everyone involved.
Kory: “As for my plans, I arrive late Friday night and will be staying in a Mister B&B house near Sea World and will be riding out the storm there. If things get too severe, I will evacuate north, but I don’t anticipate that being an issue.”
One advantage to visiting the parks in the days before or after a major weather system…light crowds!
